Did you know?

Each giraffe has a distinct and intricate pattern of spots on its body, similar to a human fingerprint. No two giraffes have the same spot arrangement.

Due to their long necks, giraffes must spread their front legs wide and bend awkwardly to reach the ground. To take a sip, they use their prehensile tongues, which can be up to 18 inches (45 centimeters) long, to wrap around vegetation or dip into water sources.

Giraffes have a specialized cardiovascular system that helps regulate blood flow to their brains. Their hearts are extremely powerful, pumping blood at high pressure to reach the brain despite the long distance from their hearts to their heads. Special valves in the neck's blood vessels also help control blood flow and prevent excess blood pressure when the giraffe lowers its head to drink or graze.
